Congratulations to Ujun Jeong, a doctoral student working under the supervision of Regents professor, Huan Liu, at the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence, or SCAI, part of the Ira. A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at ASU, who will attend the 18th International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media, or ICWSM, which will be held on June-3-6 in Buffalo, New York.

Jeong will present the paper, “Exploring Platform Migration Patterns between Twitter and Mastodon: A User Behavior Study,” which investigated increased Mastodon activity in the weeks following the ownership change of X (formerly Twitter). Co-authored Paras Sheth, Anique Tahir and Faisal Alatawi, along with H. Russell Bernard, director of the Institute for Social Science Research, and Liu, the paper identifies key differences between the content posted by users on the two platforms and offers insights on how social sites might retain users during periods of change.

The paper was supported by the U.S. Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation.

ICWSM is a conference for researchers from multiple disciplines, especially those interested in new in social theories and algorithms for analyzing social media. Attendees share knowledge, discuss ideas, exchange information, and learn about cutting-edge research happening in the arena of online social media.

Jeong sees the opportunity to broaden his horizons. “This is a more interdisciplinary conference for social computing,” he says. “I wish to explore different interests, focuses and disciplines and instill these in my research.”
