Artificial Intelligence, PhD

The Doctor of Philosophy in Artificial Intelligence at Arizona State University prepares researchers to advance the science and engineering of intelligent systems. Doctoral students develop mastery in theoretical and practical AI research, working with world-class faculty in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence, or SCAI, one of the nation’s largest, most dynamic computer science schools.

The program trains scholars and researchers to analyze, evaluate and invent new concepts for efficient, ethical and reliable AI systems, capable of impacting real-world applications from robotics and cognition to health care and transportation.

Areas of expertise
Students gain depth in one or more of three core research streams:

  • Statistical learning. Explore advanced learning algorithms, deep learning, data mining, probabilistic inference and statistical learning theory.
  • Embodied AI, cognition and perception. Develop intelligent agents that see, move and understand, through courses in robot perception, machine learning for remote sensing and natural language processing.
  • Reasoning and decision making. Study knowledge representation, planning, logic, AI safety and systems that reason and act rationally in complex environments.

In addition to completing the ASU Graduate Admissions application, the following materials must also be submitted to complete your application package:*

U.S. residents:

  • One set of official transcripts from every college and university attended, including ASU, unless the student graduated from ASU
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Letter of intent (statement of purpose)
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume

International applicants:

  • Academic credentials (all international records must be submitted in the original language accompanied by an official English translation). If you have attended a U.S. institution, one set of official transcripts from every college and university attended, except ASU.
  • Official TOEFL score, taken within the last two years (please see ASU’s English Proficiency requirements). The TOEFL score must be valid on the first day of class for the term the student is applying for. SCAI required that TOEFL scores must be above 575 (paper), or 90 (iBT). We also accept IELTS with a minimum overall band scores of 7.0 or the Pearson Test of English (PTE) with a minimum score of 65 or higher. Please see the Graduate Admissions website for TOEFL deadline dates. The ASU institution code is: 4007. If a department code is required use: 0000.
