1. Override requests not needed for: Approved CSE 500-level classes list.
2. Don’t see the class you want on the list?

Then you will need to submit an override request.

Visit the SER Handbook regarding the number of CSE electives that are permitted.

All students (Please fully read the following PRIOR to submitting override requests)

  • A Course Prerequisite Override form signed or email approved by an instructor does not guarantee a seat in the course. Each override request is subject to individual review and as such may or may not be approved. Seats are given as a priority to SCAI students first.
  • All Prereq Override Requests need to be submitted electronically. COMPLETED forms including signatures or email approval should be submitted at https://fultonapps.asu.edu/override/ students should submit requests one month prior to the course start date.
  • SCAI students will not be approved any prerequisite override requests to gain entry to courses if you have not completed all stated course prerequisite requirements, unless you have been assigned the course to fulfill a graduate program deficiency.
  • Non-degree students may not take over 12 undergraduate upper division credit hours of coursework or more than 12 graduate level credits. It is the responsibility of the student to be aware of this policy. Please see the ASU Catalog for more information. Non-degree seeking students must meet minimum GPA requirements in order to take CSE, CPI, CEN, IEE, and SER courses. Undergraduate students must have at least a 2.5 GPA and graduate students must have at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • We do not approve any section-full or time conflict overrides for courses.
  • Please read the section that pertains to you (grad/undergrad) so that you may submit all the necessary documents WITH your override request. Incomplete requests will not be processed.
  • You will receive an email notification after the override has been processed.

Undergraduate courses

*SCAI students requesting overrides to engineering courses outside of SCAI should work with their advisor for approval.

Non-SCAI students seeking overrides to SCAI courses will then need to fill out the forms below and upload them to the electronic override request. Email approval is permitted by the instructor and will need to be uploaded along with the form. If you have taken the prerequisite course at ASU and are just not in the major, you can clearly indicate this on the form below and bypass the need for instructor approval. Email [email protected] or [email protected]  with any questions.

  • ASU major and non-degree seeking students are required to complete the Prerequisite-Override Request form for approval to access any CSE, CPI, IEE, or SER courses that are blocked from registration.
  • Overrides will be reviewed as they come in. Overrides may be issued right away or at different times during the semester depending on the needs of our SCAI students in these courses. The latest an override will be issued is one week before the start of the semester and up until the drop/add deadline.
  • Overrides will not be granted for SCAI undergraduate students to bypass prerequisites of SCAI major required classes.
  • Overrides will not be granted for students trying to get into upper division courses to get into our majors without the posted admission requirements.

Graduate courses

The information below is outlined for standard courses, not for courses that require course permission via department consent. Students seeking course permission requests for these courses: (580, 590, 595, 599, 784 (IE only), 790, 792,  795, 799) from SCAI should go to: https://scai.engineering.asu.edu/course-permission-requests/.

Please Note: Request forms need to be submitted by Nov 15, 2023, for Spring 2024 in order to guarantee timely processing before the start of the semester.

Override requests will only be accepted until the day before the add/drop deadline (see academic calendar).

All graduate prerequisite override requests need to be submitted electronically. Students will need to fill out the forms below and upload them to the electronic override request. Email approval from the instructor is permitted and will need to be uploaded along with the form. Email [email protected] or [email protected] with any questions.

Non-SCAI students:

  • All students need to fill out the Prerequisite-Override Request form if you have a prerequisite that has not been met or the course is reserved for SCAI ground campus students with no open release date. Instructor approval is required before submitting the override request.
  • Please note: Approved requests for CSE and SER course overrides will be granted one week prior to the start of the semester. Approval requests for CEN, DSE and IEE courses will be granted on an ongoing basis.

You will receive an email notification after the override has been processed.

Can a Software Engineering graduate student submit override requests to non-approved classes?

An override request is not required for any CSE courses on the Approved CSE 500-level classes list. We will not approve SE MS students to take additional CSE graduate courses, since they will not count on the IPOS

I am a non-SCAI RAS MS or DSAE MS student, do I need to submit an override for CSE core courses or courses approved as elective or concentration options for my program?

Non-SCAI students do not need overrides to enroll in required core courses. However, they do need to submit override requests for courses they intend to take for elective or concentration requirements. Students do not need faculty approval if they are submitting requests for approved courses.

Does professor approval mean I am guaranteed a seat in the class?

No. If the class is full, you must wait until there is a seat available to register by the add/drop date. We do not add seats to closed classes.

Will you approve overrides for time conflicting classes?

No, we do not approve any time conflicting overrides.

I submitted an override, but it was rejected saying I need to submit required items.
  • Any overrides missing items will not be approved. Your override request is restarted when you re-submit items.

Follow directions carefully:

  • Complete the Override Form: click here
  • Screenshot of email with professor approval.
  • Submit both items here
What about overrides for Non-SCAI students?

Approved requests for CSE and SER course overrides will be granted one week prior to the start of the semester. Approval requests for CEN and IEE courses will be granted on an ongoing basis

I made an error with an override I just submitted, can I submit another one?

Please do not submit duplicate override requests.

Can I do an override to take an online course while also taking ground campus courses?

No. You may not take courses online and on campus at the same time.
